The Golf Swing Simplified

Grip and Stance

Visit my blog about the Golf Swing Simplified for more complete information

The Grip:
  • The grip should be natural, comfortable, strong. The palm of the right hand should face down the target line, and should fold over the thumb of the left hand.
  • The right pinkie finger can either interlock or overlay the forefinger of the left hand.
  • The left thumb and forefinger should be slightly pinching the grip (no straight thumbs).
  • Take the golf club back a couple of feet in a mini-swing, and with hands and arms TOTALLY relaxed, reposition the club head behind the golf ball. If your grip is right, then your club head will be square to the target. If the grip is wrong (for you) then the club head will be pointing way left or way right.
  • If necessary, djust your grip. Don’t try to fight golf swing mechanics.
The Stance:
  • Get behind your ball with club in hand and pick out 2 spots. The first is your target down the fairway, or on the green. Make sure that if you look away (which you will), that you can find it again.
  • The second spot is about 6 inches in front of your ball, in line between your target spot and the ball.
  • Now, move up to the ball and stand upright with your hips parallel to the line from ball to first-spot to target.
  • Hold the club in your left hand. Extend arm and club (straight elbow) towards the ground at about a 45 degree angle. Tilt at the waist until the club touches the ground. The ball should be in the middle of the face of the club (or slightly towards the toe). If the ball is somewhere else, then MOVE YOUR WHOLE BODY away or towads the ball. DO NOT change your waist angle or stretch or jam your elbows into your belly.
  • Now, keeping your waist angle, bring your right hand to the club while bending your RIGHT knee slightly.
  • Take your grip, make sure your club head is perpendicular to the target line. Don’t change your grip orientation if the club head is not perpendicular, instead rotate the club head and reset your grip.
You are now ready to swing!
